‘Forever Chemicals’ Linked to Decreased Bone Density
Exposure to a group of chemicals known as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (also known as PFAS or forever chemicals) is linked to lower bone density, which can lead to osteoporosis, some new research has found. The effects may even start as early as adolescence.
PFAS are widely found in food packaging and cosmetics products and are already associated with reproductive issues, cancer, and other health problems. The latest study focused on their effects on adolescents (average age 11) and young adults (average age 19).
In both groups, higher levels of PFAS in blood samples were associated with decreased bone density at follow-up. This corresponds with other existing research showing that PFAS exposure may lead to lower bone mineral density and poorer bone health in adults and older adults.
The researchers believe that stricter regulations for PFAS are needed, especially to protect at-risk populations. At the individual level, taking steps like discontinuing the use of non-stick cookware and avoiding personal care products that contain PFAS can help.
Vitamin B12 May Speed Up Tissue Repair, Could Aid Ulcerative Colitis
Vitamin B12 is an essential nutrient that plays a key role in nerve function, red blood cell production, and DNA synthesis. Now, some recent research has found that it may also play a “pivotal role” in tissue regeneration and could be involved in potential new treatments for inflammatory diseases.
More specifically, the researchers found that vitamin B12 is involved in a reaction called methylation. When the DNA of cells initiate tissue repair, they require very high levels of methylation – and therefore vitamin B12 – which is why vitamin B12 insufficiency can lead to “errors” during the repair process.
The researchers also tested the effects of vitamin B12 on a model of ulcerative colitis, finding that intestinal cells initiating repair benefit from vitamin B12 supplementation. Overall, they determined that a vitamin B12 supplement has the potential to help patients with ulcerative colitis and other intestinal diseases.
“Our research uncovers a critical role of vitamin B12 in cellular reprogramming and tissue repair,” said Dr. Manuel Serrano, lead researcher. “These findings hold promise for regenerative medicine, with the potential to benefit patients through an improved nutrition.” (For more on B12, see article ‘Vitamin B12 Deficiency Warning Signs + Best Plant Sources’ below ↓)

Is the Human Mind Meant to Stay Awake Past Midnight?
Circadian rhythm is the natural internal process that regulates the sleep-wake cycle. Research has long indicated that disruptions to circadian rhythm have a big impact on sleep quality, leading some experts to question whether staying up late – past midnight, for example – is contrary to a natural biological rhythm and harmful to the brain. Though there is no conclusive answer yet, some studies do show that disrupted sleep-wake cycles and staying up late may contribute to poorer cognitive function, mental health issues, and even addiction. Moderate Low-Carb Diet May Improve Type 1 Diabetes
In contrast to type 2 diabetes, type 1 diabetes is thought to stem from an autoimmune reaction. Though less is known about the exact cause of type 1 diabetes, lifestyle changes can still help to manage it. According to some new research, adopting a moderate low-carbohydrate diet (30% of energy from carbs) could be one such beneficial change, since it was found to significantly improve overall glucose levels with more time spent in the “target range.” (More)
Plant-Based Eaters Often Lack Key Nutrients During Pregnancy
Though research has shown that plant-based eating can be incredibly healthy, it does open the door for nutrient shortfalls, particularly for those who avoid dairy as well as meat. These nutrient insufficiencies are especially concerning during pregnancy with a recent study finding that pregnant women are most likely to be lacking in folate, riboflavin, vitamin B12, vitamin B6, or vitamin D. Supplements can help make up for these shortfalls with more plant-derived options becoming available. (More)
Personalized Strategies Could Improve Alzheimer’s Risk Profile by 145%
Alzheimer’s disease is expected to affect 153 million people around the world by the year 2050. Though there is no known treatment yet, lifestyle changes – like eating healthier, getting quality sleep, and exercising regularly – have been found to help lower the risk of Alzheimer’s. However, the most powerful strategy may be a more personalized approach that takes into account unique risk factors and comes up with a specific plan. This type of intervention was found to improve Alzheimer’s risk profile by up to 145% in one recent study. (More)
6 Top Benefits AND Downsides of Juicing
Juicing can be a good way to use up excess produce, but you might want to consider all the pros and cons before you make it a regular habit. On the plus side, fresh juices are packed full of health-boosting vitamins and antioxidants and haven’t been through pasteurization, which can kill beneficial microbes. However, juices lack the fiber that’s present in whole fruits and veggies and often contain a surprising amount of calories and sugar. If you want to sneak more produce into your diet, smoothies may be the healthier option. (More)

Basal metabolic rate (BMR) refers to the minimum number of calories your body needs in a state of rest and accounts for 60-70% of total energy use. A further 10% of energy is used up in the process of converting food into usable fuel, while the remainder goes toward physical activity.
